Regarding the manifestations of Kiev, the majority of! the local population in Eastern observed them with resignation, mistrust, and even anxiety. Stereotypes and clichés Banderivtsi - nationalist radicals in Western countries threatening Russian-speaking citizens of Ukraine in the east, stereotypes that date back to the Orange Revolution, have been extensively used by pro-government media as by Russian media.

With the hardening of the confrontation between the regime and the protesters, the violence is also exported in the regions. The annexation of the Crimea by Moscow created a completely new political option for the people and local political elites of the East and South: the pro-Russian separatism. Western observers wonder where all these come separatists and if the majority of the local population in the East, especially in the rebel regions of Donetsk and Luhansk, is actually pro-Russian. To answer this question, it seems to me that UaDreams must return to the recent history of the region, which was part of the Ukrainian red belt. In the 1990s the electorate frustrated and depleted of the industrial region of Donbass gave a large majority to the Communists. Subsequently, the policy of "electoral machine" [1] the Party of Regions has allowed to harvest these protest votes by playing on the issue! s related to the Russian language and local identity, based on nostalgic references Soviet past and a specific paternalistic political culture. Tatiana Zhurzhenko: During recent months the cliché of the new government in Kiev "fascist junta" and greatly exaggerated threat of the Ukrainian radical nationalism (especially the references to the organization of the extreme right Pravyi Sektor who participated in demonstrations) were powerful tools for the manipulation of public opinion which is dependent on Russian media. Since the beginning of euromaidan, Kiev protesters were portrayed as dangerous criminals and radicals, and Berkut riot police as they treat protesters brutally, were presented as heroes or martyrs. Except for the opposition TV channel Dozhd and some independent sites, Russian media relay the official position of the Kremlin, which does not recognize the legitimacy of the current government. On top of that, UaDreams learn policies and Russian journalists that Ukraine is an artificial construct that can not continue with its current borders, and that anyone who speaks the Rus! sian language is Russian and dream to find his homeland. This parallel virtual reality, created by Russian media, has taken root in the minds of many Ukrainian citizens.

How should the Ukrainian government react? From a liberal point of view, considering that freedom of expression is the most important value, it is certain that the closure of Russian TV channels is far from the best solution. The Ukrainian government, however, considers that it is the subject of an aggression from a neighboring state, even if at this point it is a phoney war, delegated to paramilitary units and Russian volunteers and supported by Ukrainian and Russian armament financing. It is no coincidence that television transmission towers were among the first sites conquered by separatist; they immediately turned back the Russian TV channels.

The anti-Ukrainian propaganda of Russian media is part of Moscow's strategy and the question is how contravene effectively. I think, however, that a legitimately elected president can fill the void left by the flight of Ianoukovych, restore the rule of law and allay fears of the population.

& Ideas: In the current situation, it seems that there is a deep rift between the political class and the Ukrainian society. Is the presidential election in a position to solve?

Tatiana Zhurzhenko: The current presidential elections are unusual for Ukraine, because they deviate from the traditional opposition between candidates pro-Europe and pro-Russia candidate. The two favorites - Petro Poroshenko and Yulia Tymoshenko - have promised to defend the territorial integrity of the country against Russia and see the future of Ukraine in the framework of the European Union. The annexation of the Crimea and the extension of the "hybrid war" by Russia in Ukraine have seen a shift in public opinion towards a pro-European perspective, as confirmed by the most recent polls.

For the first time in the recent history of Ukraine, Eastern has no influential political figure in. The official candidate of the Party of Regions, former Governor Mykhailo Dobkin Kharkiv, is lowest in surveys.
